Frozen is the first single of Delain. It’s a catchy and powerful song which is very representative of the band’s universe: stirring chorus, symphonic arrangements, energetic riffs and choirs… The single version is a little bit different from the one available on the album. Indeed, whereas Marco Hietala was doing backing vocals in the album, we can only hear Charlotte in this new version. Besides, there are also some changes. For instance, we have a different version of the guitar solo.
The second track is Deep Frozen, which is the first version of Frozen, also available as a bonus track on Lucidity. The two songs present a woman who is desperately waiting for signs of love and attention from the man she loves. But she just comes up against a brick wall, for the man seems rather uncomfortable about all those feelings he doesn’t know how to handle… The theme and the story are the same in the two versions of the song, but the narration style of Deep Frozen differs from the Frozen’s one. Indeed, the song is featured as a dialog between the two protagonists (George’s grunts representing the man voice).
Even if there is no previously unreleased song on this single, and even if the recording sessions match the ones of the album (with the guests), the band members are present because we can see them on the video of Frozen (available as a CD-Rom bonus). This is a very well-crafted video directed in a cinema kind of way, with a fantastic atmosphere in which Charlotte is chased by a ghost who freezes all the symbolic objects of the past on its way …
"Frozen gathers specific elements which come back in the album. You have a soft part, you have a guitar solo, you also have a good guitar riff… all kinds of elements brought back in one song."
